As Stemilt’s Controller, you are responsible for all aspects of accounting processes, period-end, financial reporting and operational controls. You will ensure accurate monthly financial statements are prepared timely and determine adequate controls are in place, executed properly, and improved as needed.
Working directly with the Director of Finance. you will define appropriate control testing timelines and procedures, and you will work with department leaders to ensure solid understanding and adherence to financial processes, procedures and policies. You also ensure all financial processes and controls are documented, develop reports to track variances, look for patterns to improve operations, and report any control deficiencies. The ability to build strong relationships and collaborate across all business units (including partners) constructively and efficiently is critical for the success of this role.
Additional Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting and financial reporting processes and technology solutions
- Finance department ERP business process owner, evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database; driving and supporting implementation and upgrade project management, ongoing monitoring as needed
- Ensure compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) standards and regulatory requirements for both parent and subsidiary organizations
- Drive the monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close processes including analytical review of the period operating results to ensure accurate records are maintained
- Management and oversight of the daily finance department functions and personnel: general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable (7+ direct and indirect reports)
- Define and maintain internal controls and safeguards
- Analyze accounting information and reconcile financial discrepancies and fluctuations in balance sheets and profit & loss reporting
- Prepare the monthly and quarterly balance sheet, profit & loss statements, supporting schedules and other special reports
- Preparation and maintenance of documentation supporting significant accounting principles and Stemilt-wide accounting policies and procedures
- Assist in the management of the business insurance program; effective planning and management of insurance renewals and premium audits, analysis of coverage requirements and premium cost; management of incidents and claims
- Oversee annual audit process and all other financial audits. Own and drive the relationship with our external audit partner.
- Work with our external tax partner to define multi-year tax strategies as well as yearly tax filing processes
- Lead Controllership related initiatives, projects and programs
- Acquire and maintain a thorough understanding of business issues, strategies and risks. Develop a deep understanding of our business drivers and trends
- Stay abreast of industry trends and developments, as well as applicable regulations.
- Responsible for the implementation of new accounting guidance, as applicable.
- Bring new thinking and way of doing things to the function, Finance and Stemilt as appropriate
- Build, develop and lead a high performing Controllership team to help Finance scale and Stemilt achieve our company strategy

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with an emphasis in Accounting
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- 5+ years of experience in public accounting, including experience auditing
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP; knowledge of IFRS standards a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical skills
- A proven ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and to build strong working relationships
- Demonstrable experience managing, developing, and mentoring finance professionals, growing future leaders and inspiring high performing teams
- Experience with financial systems in a SaaS based environment
- Experience in the agricultural industry; tree fruit industry preferred
